The article focuses on various topics discussed in the April 2003 issue of the 'Journal of Teaching in Physical Education.' Physical education has received considerable criticism related to issues of relevance, inequity, and quality. Gary D. Kinchin and Mary O'Sullivan begin this issue with a view of how high school students view physical education and their support for or resistance to a cultural studies curriculum unit. Melinda A. Solmon, Ameli M. Lee, Donald Belcher, Louis Harrison, and Lori Wells offer insight into the relationship between gender appropriateness and conceptions of ability on competence beliefs.
