ABSTRACT
The article presents information on the video recording "New View/New Eyes." According to the director of the video recording, everything is possible in India. The director talks to herself, asks questions of herself, and reflects on the three cultures she grew up with: her mother was German, her father Indian, and she grew up in Toronto, Canada. The film is structured using text on the screen to explain and define themes. She combines her footage with music, poetry, entries from her journal, and her inner dialogue. Some of her visuals are more poetic than explanations. She also shoots home movie footage when she meets her father's family in Bombay and when she takes her aunt and uncle on a trip to Toronto's Honest Ed's Department Store. Her trip to visit her father's family is not as a tourist but not as a participant either. She is an outsider with a great desire to understand. She gets stared at, finds it uncomfortable to film, and simultaneously unnerving and joyful to see herself in the eyes of her father's family.
