ABSTRACT
The article explores the history of racial identity and immigration in the U.S. through an examination of nativist literature and commentary on Scandinavian Americans. Emphasis is given to a mix of racial romanticism and race theory that situates a Teutonic race in the hierarchy of whiteness and American national characteristics. Other topics include comparisons to the Vikings, the alleged racial superiority of Anglo-Saxon immigrants, and cultural assimilation.
