AS the eyes of the world turn to a small peninsula in the Black Sea, inevitable memories are stoked of an earlier bloody conflict in Crimea. The 1853-56 war cost a million Russian, British, Turkish and French lives and its grim highlights are still remembered: The Charge of the Light Brigade, Balaclava, the Thin Red Line, Florence Nightingale.
