The article discusses a study to determine how automobile driving is affected by a driver's mind being either focused on the task at hand or wandering. Study participants were randomly exposed to a thought probe of an auditory tone while using a driving simulator. Results indicated that a lack of focus on driving was associated with longer reaction times to unexpected events, faster driving, and maintenance of shorter distances from other vehicles.
