ABSTRACT
A detailed acoustic analysis and hearing analysis have shown that vibrancy is an essential feature even of the Czech consonant Å™ in both its variants (i.e. voiced and unvoiced), although it need not be involved in every single realization. However, if the fricative noise is repeatedly suppressed (or if the fundamental tone also fluctuates in the voiced variant), a Czech listener will identify the respective segment no more than as a realization of the phoneme /Å™/. - The peripheral position of /Å™/ (and the vibrants generally) in the Czech consonantal system has its equivalent in the complex structure of the distinctive feature of "vibrancy".
