Ultrastructure of three typical halophytes near the Qinghai Lake

The ultrastructure of leaf blades of three typical halophytes including Chenop-odium glaucum, Potentilla anserina and Polygonum sibiricum were examined and investigated using the transmission electron microscope, compared with the same plants growing in Xining district. (l)There were many larger starch grains in chloroplasts of three typical halophytes. (2) The mitochondria were enclosured by the chloroplast. Even some were "phaged" by the chloroplast. (3) The number of mitochondria increased obviously, compared with those growing in Xining district, and they located around the chloroplast. (4) The thylakoid of chloroplasts swelled. Some membranes of the thylakoid collapsed or disintegrated partly, even became, into cavitations. (5) There appeared a kind of special structure-cisterna in the mesophyll cell of the three typical halophytes. It was suggested that all of the characteristics of three typical halophytes near the Qinghai Lake described above were a great adaptation of the plant to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau saline environments, as well as the result by long time stress of habitat factors.
