ABSTRACT
The article discusses understandings of evolution, reason, and emotions in the neurological sciences during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Particular focus is given to the impact of evolutionary theories on scientists' attitudes towards emotions. The work of scientists John Hughlings Jackson, Henry Head, Grafton Elliot Smith, and George G. Campion is discussed.
