ABSTRACT
The article presents the vision given by Richard Hansen, Foundation for Anthropological Research and Environmental Studies president, on the crucial theme of archaeology on why societies prosper and disappear. He discusses the characteristics of cultures that endure. A strong army for society to defend itself and solidarity are cited as other requirements for societies to thrive. Also mentioned are the protection of the environment and the need for visionary leaders.
