ABSTRACT
Institute of Horticulture, the branch of Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry, started the activity on May 1st, 1938, when in Valinava country, Kedainiai district, not far away from Dotnuva, Experimental Station of Horticulture was established. In 1987 experimental station was reorganized as Lithuanian Institute of Horticulture. In 2010 the Institute was included into the new institution, Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry. Presently 42 scientific workers are working at the Institute, among them -- 2 members of Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, 3 professors, 1 docent, 36 doctors of sciences. Every year 10-12 doctoral students are maintaining a doctor's thesis. The most important activity fields of the Institute are following: to develop theoretical basis for breeding, genetics and biotechnology of horticultural plants, to create new cultivars, to accumulate, preserve and investigate the plant genetic resources in Lithuania, to investigate biological regularities of plants, to create agrobiological systems, which predetermine quality and productivity, to model and optimize the processing and storage methods of fruits, berries and vegetables, to analyse biologically active substances of horticultural plants in the natural and processed production. Scientific work is being organized in three scientific departments: Genetic and Biotechnology of Orchard Plants, Horticulture Technologies and Vegetable Growing; two sectors: Vegetable Breeding and Vegetable Growing Technologies; and three laboratories: Plant Protection, Plant Physiology, Biochemistry and Technology. The institute publishes the peer-rewieved scientific journal "Sodininkystė ir daržininkystė".
