ABSTRACT
The investigation of possibilities to predict spring emergence and light patterns of apple sawly (Hoplocampa testudinea Klug) imagoes was conducted in conventionally and organically managed apple orchards at the Institute of Horticulture of Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry (E55º4'; N23º48') in 2010-2012. A temperature sum method based on soil (at 10 cm depth) and air (at 150 cm height) temperatures and using several different starting dates to start calculations was studied. White sticky traps Rebell®Bianco (Andermatt Biocontrol, Switzerland) were used to monitor light patterns of apple sawly. Temperature sum of 120 degree-days accumulated in soil for apple sawly adult spring emergence was obtained. The most appropriate date to start calculations was found to be the day, when a temperature of 4 °C in the soil was reached. Temperature sums of 169, 219 and 265 day-degrees based on soil temperatures at 10 cm depth were obtained to predict 25, 50 and 75 % of cumulative density of apple sawly imagoes. However, these temperature sums could be only relevant if no pre-bloom control measures are applied against apple sawly imagoes and used as very rough estimate of population increase pattern. Temperature sum of 160 day-degrees based on air temperatures at 150 cm height was obtained, with 1 April being most relevant fixed date to start the calculations. However, because of high variation in temperature sums and deviations from the day of the irst capture, temperature sum method based on soil temperatures should be preferred.
