ABSTRACT
The article presents the author's comments on events that made news during the decade of the 1940s. The author tells that in 1944, the Servicemen's Readjustment Act, known as the G.I. Bill which fostered the birth of a vast middle class, became law. The author mentions the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1944 which heralded the notion of tying the U.S. together with a 40,000-mile network of roads.
