Hollywood Liberalism

This article demonstrates that the people who create American screen entertainment operate in an environment that is permeated by liberal social, economic, and political attitudes. Economic liberalism consists in being relatively hospitable to the idea of using government to equalize wealth and power, and to regulate business. Economic liberals tend to favor labor over management, and to be more concerned about the environmental damage that may accompany industrial development than about the possible benefits to be derived there from. On a variety of measures Hollywood opinion leaders are either economically liberal as or more liberal than the general population. Americans in general endorse the idea of spending more federal money on the homeless, the environment, health care, and public schools; even a larger percentage of Hollywood opinion leaders are willing to increase spending. The Hollywood elite is more supportive of the idea of raising taxes, less admiring of American business, more favorably inclined toward government regulation of business, and less suspicious of labor unions than is the public in general. When sociologists consider that this is a sample composed mainly of the successful and well to do, these findings are remarkable.
