ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the campaign of former U.S. Senator Eugene McCarthy of Minnesota for the Democratic presidential nomination in April 1968 in Indiana which had been unwelcomed by the Hoosiers. It says that McCarthy appeared uncomfortable connecting with them and was put off by the general defensiveness in the state against outsiders. It states that McCarthy's worst mistake came in his treatment of poet Whitcomb Riley, who was one of the most beloved figures in Indiana.
