ABSTRACT
Reports that the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.'s (FDIC) latest assessment of the banking industry is one of the gloomiest ever. The FDIC reported it was monitoring a record $613 billion in troubled bank assets at the end of January, up 51 percent from last June. The FDIC was in the red for the first time ever at the end of 1991; There are signs that some banks may be turning a corner; More banks were profitable last year than in the year before.
