November 2013
Daily Mail;11/16/2013, p20
For a troubled new show, it could have been the final nail in the coffin. It was 22 November 1963, and President John F Kennedy had been shot dead in Dallas that very day, plunging the world into mourning. As people on both sides of the Atlantic clamoured for news of the assassination, it seemed the last thing on anyone's minds would be watching a new sci-fi show. And even those viewers in the mood for a little escapist entertainment couldn't necessarily see it, because a power cut blacked out parts of Britain. Yet, as a new BBC drama An Adventure In Space And Time reveals, Doctor Who somehow survived its early problems to become Britain's most successful sci-fi series.
