ABSTRACT
Criticizes the United States Department of Homeland Security's Ready Campaign, a public awareness campaign which offers advice for protecting one's home against terrorist attack. But it's not homes we need to worry about most. According to counterterrorism experts and past history, terrorists target densely crowded urban areas--subways, office buildings, malls, and other places where people won't have flashlights and Poland Spring at hand. And the Ready Campaign offers little useful advice for these more likely scenarios. The same goes for the campaign's discussion of a radioactive "dirty bomb." What's more, no advice at all is offered to people about how to avoid panicking and getting trampled, a potentially fatal consequence of a dirty bomb or other terrorist attack. Perhaps the most puzzling thing about this public information campaign is that much of the useful public information it omits is available elsewhere.
