ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the discovery of Belding's ground squirrels between 1902 and 1966 by a team of scientists from the University of California, Berkeley, and the Missouri Botanical Garden during a survey of 74 sites of the state. It cites the abundance in manmade locations at those same elevations particularly in the campgrounds, alfalfa fields and parks of Bodie. It notes that squirrels were flourishing among the town's manmade ruins even as climate change threatens their natural habitat.
