This paper describes the ways in which a website owner and operator can serve as a model for New Literacies Teaching. The design of the site is intimately related to the owner/operator's life experience and philosophies; therefore, the content of the site and what constitutes legitimate knowledge and participation at Fark are determined by the "ethos" set forth by the site owner. Teaching New Literacies in modern classrooms requires a commitment to not only the content but the modalities of those New Literacies, something which the owner of Fark has woven into his own administration of Fark.com. Educators may do well to examine the ways in which the design and the "ethos" of Fark attract and maintain communities where a high degree of complex learning and interaction takes place.
