Discusses the aspects of servility, opportunity and freedom in the choice of music composition as a profession. Fluorishing of music composition following the Treaty of Westphalia; Focus on German composers; Tension between the opportunities offered to musicians by noble courts and the inhibitions on composers' freedom that postfeudal institutions imposed.
