ABSTRACT
Not many small business owners are thankful for a sluggish economy. But quiltmaker Denyse Schmidt is--at least in hindsight. After the former graphic designer introduced her colorful modern quilts in 1996, orders poured in, even at $1,000 for a 36-inch-by-48-inch wall hanging. But by 2001, with the economy in a daze and sales of luxury goods declining, Schmidt's business suffered, with quilt sales falling by some 20 percent. She diversified her business by licensing her designs to companies that manufacture items such as aprons and tabletop and bath accessories. Early in 2002, she struck a deal to have her designs appear on stationery that comes out in 2003.
