ABSTRACT
Argues that the paintings at Castelseprio are Mariological rather than Christological. Evidence of three damaged scenes; Theological equation of Mary with the Church; Origination of the imagery in the late eighth or early ninth century; Reconstruction of the lost scenes; Compositional and typological relationships among the scenes that express a theological equation of Mary with the Church.
