ABSTRACT
Describes the first Santa, James Edgar of Brockton, Massachusetts, who had a Santa costume made to order in Boston and first wore it in his Brockton dry goods store in 1890. By 1891 Santa had appeared at many major department stores and was an institution by the turn of the century.
