Michael, retired after 31 years in the Air Force, (Fairfield, Calif.), whose day of glory was April 11, 1944 when he piloted his B-17 on his 26th mission, had seven crewmembers bail out after being hit and hit again, then evading the Luftwaffe fighters for three hours to bring the B-17 back to England, in a near-perfect belly landing on the last drops of fuel.
