Saccharum Spontaneum as a Source of Renewable Fuel for CI Engine

In the current study kans grass (saccharum spontaneum), which is renewable in nature and available in Bangladesh, was used as a source of pyrolytic liquid production. Kans grass is cheaper than other biomasses, easy to grow and does not interfere with food versus fuel conflict. For pyrolytic liquid production, a fixed bed pyrolysis system was designed, fabricated and tested for its performance in this investigation. Pyrolysis is one of the most important thermochemical energy conversion methods for wastes and biomasses. Due to higher conversion capability of biomass in to liquid, fixed bed pyrolysis system is more favorable among different other thermochemical conversion processes. The major components of the current pyrolysis system are fixed bed reactor, condenser and liquid collector. The effect of reaction temperature, running time and the feed material size on pyrolysis liquid yield was investigated. The pyrolytic liquid was characterized and its properties compared with those of conventional diesel fuel.
