ABSTRACT
The article reports on Amy Mathew, a farmer of Indiana, who started South Circle Farm in 2011, on just under 2 acres of abandoned city land which a community- development corporation offered her. She had to build the farm from the scratch. An early career in hunger- related social work awakened her to small- scale, sustainable agriculture. She deploys bio- intensive techniques and rotates her crops. She uses only hand- powered tools and totally avoids herbicides or pesticides
