ABSTRACT
1st SESSION ENG 57-1 57 runs, 1 wicket, 27 overs IT was a war of attrition before lunch as Australia bowled well under cloudy skies and England's batsmen settled into a test of endurance and patience. Joe Root's dismissal — the only one of a relatively quiet first session — was a welcome triumph for technology as umpire Tony Hill turned down Shane Watson's appeal for caught behind, but Michael Clarke asked for a review and the much-maligned Hot Spot system confirmed there had been the slightest of nicks. Australia bowled well but Peter Siddle was strangely under-used by the tourists.
