The article looks at digital forensics, or the study of evidence from electronic equipment with digital data storage including computers and cell phones in the context of criminal or civil-law investigations, as of 2013. It discusses best-practice standards in areas such as collection and handling of digital information from crime scenes. Topics include hash functions, or algorithms that map strings of data to specific binary numbers, and file carving, or scanning for deleted data.
