ABSTRACT
The article presents a study that investigates the Cobitis specimens collected from Lake Poyang and its feeders, which were kept in the Freshwater Fishes Museum (FFM) of the Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Wuhan in the province of Hubei. Three new species of Cobitis are found which include C. fasciola, C. crassicauda and C. stenocauda and are described based on morphology features and sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome b (cyt b) gene, which can be utilized for molecular determination and diagnosis of such species. Illustrations of the morphology characters of the new species are also presented, with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) lineages revealing close relationship to these cobitid fish.
