ABSTRACT
DANCES OF DEATH Gate, W11 fiona mountford FITTINGLY, the couple behind me at the Gate were having a distinctly acerbic conversation prior to the start of this play. August Strindberg would surely have smiled with twisted pleasure, given that his drama centres on a married couple who have been tormenting each other for 30 years. It's no wonder Edward Albee used them as inspiration for George and Martha in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? We normally just get to see Part One of The Dance of Death (1900), an airless three-hander in the manner of Strindberg's Miss Julie. Here, however, Howard Brenton's robust new adaptation also includes Part Two, which sees the misery opened out to the next generation. But if ever a play didn't necessitate a sequel it's this one and Part Two's endless flashes of short scenes in an uncertain location tell us little we couldn't have intuited from the end of Part One.
