ABSTRACT
Alfred Orage, the longstanding editor of socialist literary magazine The New Age, firmly believed that art - both literary and visual - had the power to transform the political future, and used the arts to move the policymakers and tastemakers of his age to improve society. In January 1910, The New Age ran a series of cover illustrations on the threat of German militarism. This article analyses these images, their relationship to their periodical and literary contexts, and their attempt to stave off invasion by encouraging readers to re-evaluate Britain's approach to domestic and foreign politics. Seen as a cradle of modernist writing, The New Age has already attracted the attention of literary scholars, but no study has thus far shown the interconnectedness between Orage's political texts and the visual arts that he believed could transform his writings into reality.
