ABSTRACT
SOUTH AFRICA kept alive their hopes of reaching the Champions Trophy semi-finals with a 67-run win that puts Pakistan on the brink of elimination. In a match that saw fights break out among fans at Edgbaston, Pakistan's lacklustre approach to the run chase was largely to blame for their defeat. Despite only needing 235 to win and having most of the fans in the ground on their side, Pakistan soon fell behind the required run rate and never looked like accelerating as they were 167 all out. Earlier, South Africa's Hashim Amla top scored with 81 as they posted a par total of 234. AB de Villiers (31) and Faf du Plessis (28) also added useful scores. Things might have been very different if Umar Amin had held on to a difficult catch when Amla was on only seven. Despite the opener's knock, it was South Africa's consistency with the ball and Pakistan's caution which decided the game. Captain Misbah-ul-Haq top-scored with 55 but never showed the necessary urgency. In truth, the Proteas made things difficult for their opponents, suffocating them with aggressive fielding while Ryan McLaren was the pick of an impressive attack with four for 19. South Africa can reach the semi-finals with a win over West Indies, while Pakistan must beat India.
