The article focuses on the role of mimesis in 19th and 20th century Neoclassism and the shift towards collage in 21st century modern art. The article discusses artists who challenged the importance of naturalism in art such as J. M. W. Turner, Jon Constable and the Cubist artists, appropriation of images and styles in art such as the work "After Walker Evans" by artist Sherrie Levine and the rejection of naturalism by artist Henri Matisse. The article also discusses an exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, France featuring the work of Matisse entitled "Paris and Series."
