Observation that the reserve is one of an international network of protected areas launched by Unesco's Man and Biosphere Program (MAB) in the 1970s; Comparison of the designation of biosphere reserve to national parks; Conservation role of the biosphere preserve, which calls for the preservation of a minimally disturbed ecosystem large enough to ensure maintenance of both species and genetic diversity over time.
