ABSTRACT
Polycrystalline samples (La[sub 1 - x]Gd[sub x])[sub 0.7]Ca[sub 0.3]MnO[sub 3] with x=0, 0.05, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 were synthesized by a solid-phase reaction method and we measured their ac magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, linear thermal expansion coefficient, magnetization, and magnetostriction as a function of temperature by using strain gauge, ac susceptometer, and a vibrating sample magnetometer. An extra contribution to the expansion coefficient was observed at T[sub c] as a consequence of the polaron effect as well as the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic and metal-insulator transition. Electrical, magnetic, and lattice structural transition temperatures correspond to 253±5 K and 224±5 with respect to x = 0 and 0.05, respectively. These results prove the presence of strong electron-phonon and spin coupling. Under the external magnetic field, transition temperatures shift to higher ones and the peak on the temperature dependence of the expansion coefficient is suppressed. These phenomena could be related to colossal magnetoresistance.
