ABSTRACT
HERNE Hill station sounds livelier than usual this morning. Piano music is tinkling from inside the ticket office and voices are sweetly singing a jolly tune. However, their lyrics are anything but: "Overnight my rent is doubled, throwing money all these years for a flat that's full of damp. Ba-ba-ba-wuruba!" Say hello to the pop-up complaint choir. Following the news last month that average rents in the capital hit a record high of £1,100 a month, rising at nearly double the rate of the rest of the country, the people of south-east London have gathered for a singsong to get their grievances heard. Herne Hill station was chosen because it has a piano — it arrived last year as part of the City of London Festival and has become a permanent fixture.
