ABSTRACT
I AM very pleased to see the Evening Standard take up the campaign to spread awareness of instances of female genital mutilation in the capital. I first came across FGM in my work as a student health visitor in the West Midlands 30 years ago: indeed, it was the blind eye turned by all sides and its dismissal as a "cultural issue" that first fired my political activism. I have been campaigning and working with inspirational women on this issue ever since.
