ABSTRACT
CONOR DUNNE stands 6ft 8in tall and proved head and shoulders above the rest of the international peloton yesterday when he outsprinted New Zealand's Michael Northey to win the opening stage of the Án Post Rás in Longford. The duo escaped with 20 kilometres to go on the 136km stage and despite a frantic lastminute chase by the rest of the field finished 29 seconds clear, with Dunne's victory propelling him into the first yellow jersey of this year's Rás with a four-second cushion over Northey. Riding for the Tipperary Iverk Produce county team, Irish Under 23 national time-trial champion was stunned with his victory, admitting that even though there were seven stages to go, it had already made his Rás.
