The Child's Elephant Rachel Campbell-Johnson David Fickling Books £9.99 ? £8.99 When Bat, a boy living on the African plains, finds an orphaned elephant, he brings her home. Together with his friend Muka, they raise the creature in their village. But their peaceful lives are shattered when they are caught up in a brutal civil war. Will the bond between Bat and the elephant survive after they are abducted by child soldiers? Campbell-Johnson's work is as vivid as it is moving. But although it's aimed at children aged nine to 11, its chilling and all-too real themes feel more suited to an older audience.
