ABSTRACT
IT WAS an open secret in theatre circles during the heady days of the 1960s, when Irish actors saw themselves as harbingers of liberality in a still straitlaced Ireland. Young actress Sinéad Cusack was having an affair with Vincent Dowling, an acclaimed performer and stage director twice her age who first met Sinéad when she was 17. He was married, with four young daughters, but the couple barely tried to hide their passion for each other - and everyone knew about the illicit affair. What everyone didn't know, however, was that Sinéad gave birth to Dowling's baby boy, whom she gave up for adoption. It wasn't until Dowling - who forged a career in the States after serving as artistic director at the Abbey Theatre - died this month that news began to trickle out: he was, in fact, the biological father of Sinéad's son, politician Richard Boyd Barrett. Indeed it appears that Dowling himself might never have known about his son except for the publicity that Boyd Barrett attracted during his 2007 Dáil campaign - when Cusack, revealed as his biological mother, canvassed for him.
