ABSTRACT
THERE are good reasons why people should dislike David Beckham intensely. Marrying Victoria. His incredible, off-thescale, wealth. A whining voice. That sarong. The poncey underwear ads. Beckham gave birth to the rise of the metrosexual man. A vain, loathsome, effeminate character as far removed from Hughie Gallacher, Jim Baxter or Nobby Stiles as it's possible to imagine. He found time to win 100 caps for England. But the football, for long enough, seemed almost a sideshow. Brand Beckham was everything. Earning money was his real job. Given the evidence, then, people should despise Beckham. But they don't. Not really. Because, at the heart of it all, he appears to be a decent man. A more intelligent and astute individual than anyone ever gave him credit for in the early days. He has an option to buy an MLS franchise at a knockdown price. He has the business nous to be a big success off the pitch.
