ABSTRACT
This article analyses some of the ideas that guide the current discussion about higher education. In particular, this article questions the neoliberal thesis which states that the only possibility for universities to be administrated is either the State or the market. In the first part, the article questions some neoliberalism ideas regarding the ways in which private and public universities should be administered. In the second part, it presents an outline of the historical evolution of German university system which helps to understand the relationship the university system had with the State. Finally, the article presents some of Wilhelm von Humboldt's ideas. These ideas help to think about the administration of universities beyond the State-market dichotomy.
