The executive branch said it backs a federal shield law to protect journalists guarding sources, and asked Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., to reintroduce an '09 bill. That follows revelations the Justice Dept. gathered AP phone records. But the law would not apply in national security situations like what the AP believes triggered its probe.
