ABSTRACT
The article discusses the military and commercial applications of the polycrystalline transparent ceramics magnesium-spinel and aluminum oxynitride (AlON) spinel. Factors affecting the ceramics' optical quality and properties are described. Mechanical properties that enable the materials to endure stress encountered in manufacturing, transport, deployment and under ballistic conditions are addressed. Transparent ceramics are also said to be harder than armor-piercing (AP) core materials.
