ABSTRACT
Mikhail Gorbachev's attempt to remake Soviet society has run into resistance in the heart of the Communist Party establishment. There are doubters and opportunists at every level, although all party factions have pledged allegiance to Gorbachev's reforms. They have shaken up society and produced some economic growth, but the workers still aren't on his side. But Gorbachev is still in a commanding position.
