ABSTRACT
Examination of flap mechanisms recovered from the wreckage of Northwest Airlines Flight 255 which crashed August 16 indicates the flaps on the McDonnell Douglas MD-82 were retracted during takeoff. The digital flight recorder provides further evidence that the flaps were retracted, as well as the wing slats. This points to a basic procedural lapse in the cockpit, and National Transportation Safety Board investigators are trying to find out how it could have happened.
