ABSTRACT
The Detroit crash of Northwest Airlines MD-82 which killed 155 people, along with a series of near-midair collisions, has subjected US air safety to renewed scrutiny. The preliminary investigation of the August 16 crash is centering on the performance of a veteran crew, and raises questions with the National Transportation Safety Board of human performance issues. Flight data recorder readings are being analyzed.
