ABSTRACT
IN McDonald's recently, a neatly dressed man approached and asked for the loyalty sticker from my coffee cup. When he had collected six, he explained casually, he could claim a free cup. I was too surprised to offer to treat him to a hot drink, but he clearly wasn't looking for charity, just a little goodwill - which is why out-of-work plumber John Sweeney's pre-paid coffee initiative, Suspended Coffee, in which cafe customers pay for an extra beverage to be donated to someone who mightn't have the price of it themselves, deserves all the support it can get.
