ABSTRACT
In this work, the influence of MgO and Al2O3 on the mineral composition of stainless steel slag was investigated through synthetic slags. The experiments were carried out in a conductive furnace and adopted a special cooling procedure. All the slag samples were analyzed by X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) equipped Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). The results show that the amount of merwinite increases with increase of MgO content and decrease of Al2O3 content, and the additions of MgO or Al2O3 promote the formation of spinel. There is more chromium dissolved into merinite phase in 4% and 12% MgO slags in comparison with 8% MgO slag, and the content of the unstable 2CaOSiO2 dissolved in spinel phase increases with MgO content rising. The addition of Al2O3 not only reduces the chromium content enclosed in merwinite and larnite phases, but also suppresses unstable phase dissolving into spinel phase. Hence, the effect of MgO and Al2O3 on slag mineral phase is not ignored, and the addition of Al2O3 achieves better result for chromium stabilization than the addition of MgO.
