Mechanochemical Synthesis of Barium Titanate and Mn-doped Barium Titanate

Barium titanate samples with and without Mn doping were successfully synthesized mechanochemically using a high-energy planetary ball mill. Barium oxide obtained by calcination of barium carbonate for 30 min in the temperature range 900 °C to 1300 °C was milled with TiO2 at 400 rpm for 3 and 6 h. MnO2 was used for Mn doping. The milled products were then annealed at 650 °C to 850 °C for 3 and 6 h. XRD and FESEM were used for phase identification and characterization. The ferroelectric characteristics of doped and un-doped nanocrystalline barium titanate were investigated by P-E loop analysis. The un-doped barium titanate exhibited a resistive character while the doped sample showed a more lossy capacitor behaviour.
